What Is Lycra Fabric?
The lycra fabric is known for its stretchability and flexibility. It can return to its original shape even after it has been stretched up to eight times its size. The fabric is also very durable and abrasion resistant. It can withstand heavy wear and tear and is often used for sportswear and clothing. The fabric is very comfortable and dries fast. It is also a good choice for swimwear and dance outfits. The fabric is also anti-bacterial and anti-odor, which makes it suitable for use in the undergarments of athletes.
The fabric is made up of long chains of monomers bonded together with a unique kind of acid. It is a polyurethane, and like other synthetics, it is highly heat resistant. It was invented by a team of scientists working for the German IG Farben corporation during the 1930s. Some of them went on to work for DuPont after the war, and their work helped usher in a revolution in textiles and apparel.
Lycra is usually combined with other fabrics, which is what gives it its elasticity. The amount of lycra added depends on the type of garment being produced. For fashion clothing, as little as 2% lycra is added to the fabric. However, high-performance clothing, such as workout apparel or swimming gear, may require up to 30% lycra.
A small amount of lycra can also increase the elasticity of other fabrics such as polyester, cotton, or wool if they are woven together. Lycra is added to these fabrics to help them retain their shape and provide security, comfort, and freedom of movement for the wearer.
It is important to note that the elastane ingredients used in the production of Lycra are fully synthesized in laboratory settings. The synthesis process involves carcinogenic chemicals, but this does not mean that the fabric is unsafe to wear. It is also important to remember that the elastane industry has not been around for very long, so we are not sure what impact it will have in the future.
While the lycra fabric has many advantages, it does have some disadvantages as well. It is not very eco-friendly, as it requires a lot of energy and the use of a wide range of toxic chemicals. In addition, it is derived from non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. In spite of this, lycra and similar fibers are still very popular.
There are four different ways to manufacture lycra, but the most common way is solution dry spinning, which accounts for 95% of global production. In this method, macroglycol is mixed with a diisocyanate monomer to create a prepolymer. This is then reacted with diamine acid, which produces another chemical reaction called chain extension reaction. The resulting elastane is then diluted with a solvent to make it thinner. The resulting strands are then twisted together and cured with magnesium stearate. The finished yarn is then transferred to a large spool and shipped out for weaving into consumer textiles.
